I like canon compliant works, canon divergences, alternate universes, and complete setting changes! That being said, I like characters to be written or drawn in-character; that is, they keep their core looks, personality and character traits from canon, despite any new settings or circumstances that impact them and the story being told. For example, a character who is very sweet and kind in-canon is likely to still show elements of that even in a darker, rougher AU.
